A practical, evidence-based checklist for discussing GPS and dashcam data with a commercial auto broker—without promising a discount.
The honest answer
GPS tracking and dashcams can give a fleet better records for a commercial auto insurance conversation. They do not guarantee a lower premium. Pricing depends on the carrier, state, fleet type, loss history, coverage, drivers, vehicles, and how the business actually uses its safety data.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that telematics can measure mileage, time of day, location, rapid acceleration, hard braking, hard cornering, and other driving information. An insurer may use some of that information when evaluating risk.
What to prepare before renewal
- A written safety process. Explain who reviews speeding, harsh events, seatbelt alerts, and video events—and what happens after a repeated issue.
- A clean trend report. Show several months of comparable data instead of one good week.
- Documented coaching. Keep a simple record of the event, conversation, action, and follow-up.
- Incident evidence procedures. Define who can retrieve video, how long it is retained, and how it is shared with an insurer or attorney.
- Vehicle and driver controls. Include maintenance, driver qualification, and policy enforcement—not only hardware installation.
Questions to ask your broker
- Does the carrier review fleet telematics data?
- Which events or reports are useful during underwriting?
- Is a formal safety program required?
- Are cameras, GPS devices, or specific data-sharing programs recognized?
- What privacy and consent documents should the fleet maintain?
- When should reports be submitted before renewal?
What not to promise internally
Do not build a purchasing decision around a claimed percentage discount. A safer business case is that telematics can improve the quality of your records, support coaching, help reconstruct events, and give your broker more information about how the fleet manages risk.
