Price is only one line item
A low monthly price can be a good fit when the use case is simple. It can also hide limits that matter to a working fleet. Compare the complete operating fit before deciding.
Eight questions to ask
- How often does the device report while moving? Ask for the normal interval, not only the word “real-time.”
- Which cellular technologies and carriers does it use? Confirm that the hardware is supported in the areas where your fleet works.
- What happens when coverage drops? Ask whether the device stores positions and uploads them later.
- How quickly are alerts processed? Test geofence, power-disconnect, and movement alerts before a full rollout.
- Does it have backup power? Backup behavior matters if vehicle power is removed.
- Can you export your data? Confirm access to trips, stops, events, and reports in a useful format.
- What support is included? Ask who handles activation, replacement, troubleshooting, and installation questions.
- What is the total cost? Include hardware, subscription, installation, accessories, replacements, and cancellation terms.
Why network generation matters
The FCC warned consumers and businesses to plan for carrier shutdowns of older 3G networks because connected devices could stop working. Confirm the modem and carrier support of any tracker you are considering.
Run a small pilot
Test a few representative vehicles or assets. Measure reporting consistency, alert delivery, install fit, battery behavior, and support response before buying for the full fleet.
